Wake-Up Call on Steroids - Unpublished Article - 4-1-2005
[I wrote this non-fiction article to coincide with the opening of the 2005 Major League Baseball season. This piece asserted that in 2005 there would be a new dimension added to watching baseball that summer. Sport fans everywhere would be discussing much more than home run hitters, favorite teams, late season trades and Most Valuable Players awards. These timeless debates would be overshadowed by the dark little melodrama that continued to take center stage: the steroid controversy. I contended that we had been given a wake-up call. Since so many eyes were finally watching, perhaps steroid use would eventually fade into oblivion. Unfortunately, as I post this piece ten years later, it does not seem the problem has been solved, even with all the rhetoric and drug testing by Major League Baseball. We can only still hope.]
